Casualty of WWII,Robert was a Radio Officer with the Royal Air Force Ferry Command.
He was 30 and the son of Thomas and Mattie Duncan, of Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada; he left a widow,Sigrid Duncan, of Port Arthur, and a son, Gary Robert Duncan who was born July 11 1941.

The pilot started the take off procedure from runway 06. The aircraft did not take off, overrun and hit a first bank, bounced and crashed in a huge explosion on a second embankment. All 22 occupants were killed. The pilot in command started the take off procedure from runway 06 which was not suitable for the takeoff as it was too short for such aircraft.

The victims of this tragedy are commemorated, though not by name, on a special in Ayr Cemetery. The memorial was erected as a result of a subscription by the inhabitants of Whitletts as a token of respect.
